The seaside city of Barcelona with its culture and famous architecture has more to offer than you might think. It’s not just a great city for quality cuisine and endless beaches but is also one of history.

The city is over 2000 years old and can be traced back to “Barcino,” a Roman colony that was founded by Emperor Augustus.

In fact, there are many visible remains of the ”Barcino” era. If you walk around Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter you’ll see the evidence and remains first hand.

Between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD they built a wall around Barcino that was used into the middle ages. It was put up for defensive purposes as well as to mark the cities perimeter. With a maximum population of 3500 to 5000 people in 2AD it had grown from somewhere to “distribute land among retired soldiers” into a city with much more importance and activity, becoming known for its wine, which was widely exported.

Although the Roman’s had a really important impact on the city and its development, maybe its the more recent history that it’s more widely known.

In this photo taken whilst flying above the city, you can see Gaudi’s world famous Sagrada Familia cathedral, standing proud in the Eixample district. The cathedral which to this date is still under construction having started in 1882 has been named a “UNESCO World Heritage Site”. Apparently upon Gaudi’s death in 1926, he was buried in the Sagrada Familia’s crypt, where at the time only a quarter of his engineering project had been completed.

I loved visiting, exploring and shooting in this city! Maybe next time I’ll be able to chill a bit more and swim in the sea a little more :)

What would you like to do in Barcelona?
