Given its stunning architecture and importance to the city of New York, you can easily see why Grand Central Terminal (or station as the locals fondly call it) is so beloved and has become a landmark.
The first Grand Central Terminal was built in 1871. However, soon enough it was considered obsolete as New York banned steam trains after a disastrous train collision in 1902. 17 people were killed, leaving a further 38 injured. This caused the city to start planning to demolish the existing station mere months after the incident. The newly proposed plans set about drawing up a new terminal that would accommodate electric trains on the same site as the, then still standing terminal.

Taking 11 years to be completed, the new Grand Central Terminal officially opened to over 150,000 people in 1913 to celebrate its opening. It quickly became the busiest train station in the US and in 1947 it helped 65 million people reach their destinations, which is the equivalent of 40% of the country’s population. The new building boasted features that included; a massive marble staircase, three 75ft tall windows and its now famous clock, that sits in the middle of the concourse, and is valued at $20 million.

Is there a more iconic station than New York’s Grand Central Terminal?
